Key Points to Know About Astigmatism

by Mar 9, 2017

A normal-shaped eye is perfectly rounded, allowing for even distribution of light to produce sharp images and clear vision. Any irregularities or changes to the shape of the eye can produce blurry vision and refractive errors, like astigmatism. In today’s post, your trusted eye doctor from the Neal Eye Group explains what astigmatism is, what causes it, and how our experienced doctors treat it.

Causes and Types

There are two major types of astigmatism: corneal, which occurs when your cornea becomes irregularly curved, and lenticular, which results from your natural lenses being unusually shaped. Both types can cause distorted near- and far-range vision.

Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Risk Factors

The characteristic symptom of astigmatism is blurred vision in viewing both close and distant objects. You may also experience headaches and eyestrain. If you experience any of these manifestations, we recommend visiting our eye specialists. We can perform a comprehensive eye exam, which includes visual acuity and refraction tests.

There is no known root cause of astigmatism, although heredity is a factor. Certain eye injuries and surgeries also show a positive association with the condition.

Our Suggested Management

Once we have confirmed astigmatism in your eyes during a comprehensive eye exam, we will begin by prescribing corrective eyewear. This may include using toric lenses for your contact lenses or eyeglasses. While standard lenses take a spherical shape, toric ones are similar to a sliced donut. This shape allows different refractive powers on various horizons to compensate for your eyes’ irregular curvature.
